Put some pep in your step with a pep-talk

When was the last time you gave someone a Pep Talk? When was the last time someone gave you a Pep Talk? The dictionary says this talk makes someone feel more courageous or enthusiastic. The Secret Society of Happy People, founded in 1998, sees it as a rallying cry to make yourself and others happy.

So, if it’s been a while, it’s time to start spreading happiness with a pep talk by shaking the dust off yours. Practice that pep talk by giving one to yourself first. Don’t be shy. Just think of it as giving yourself a motivational speech. Here’s how:

1. High-five Yourself

Go on! Or give yourself a pat on the back because you deserve it. Hmmm. Come to think of it, that may be physically impossible, so just give yourself credit by saying, “Way to go!” And, by the way, leave evidence of your high-five by doing it in the mirror and not cleaning the handprint off.

2. Practice Positive Self-talk

Positive self-talk is a great way to relieve stress, increase self-esteem, and gradually strengthen your mind. It will train your brain to think positively and lead to a positive attitude. Still trying to figure out where to start? Try these fill-in-the-blanks:

•          I’m fantastic because __________.

•          I’m proud of myself because __________.

•          Even though _______ didn’t work out, I am moving forward.

•          One of my strengths is _________.

•          I am thankful for __________.

3. Write a list of your talents, passions, interests, and strengths. Make a note of all the reasons you are amazing.

4. When you’ve done all of this, treat yourself to something you love. Get a massage, buy yourself a Dairy Queen, go to a movie, treat yourself to a new book. Whatever it is, go for it because you deserve it.

And, once you’ve practiced giving yourself a pep talk, give one to a friend using this same method. If it makes you happy, it will likely make your friend happy.
